It premiered early on February 15, 2023 on Disney+, and had its official premiered on February 18, 2023, alongside "Run the Rink".[1]

Synopsis[]

When Lunella loses a game of chess against a supercomputer, her obsession with winning drives the frustrated computer to program every device in the school to attack her.[1]

Plot[]

Somewhere in the Lower East Side, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur are racing each other, and eventually Moon Girl ends up winning. She cheers at the fact that she won. However, when she gets back to her secret laboratory, she sees on one of her monitors her dad says that they will be tearing up tonight. Her mom follows by saying that they are ready to get this party started, and Pops then says, "Ain't no party like this family's party!". Lunella rushes home using her secret elevator and is excited at the fact that there's a party. However, she is shocked to find out that her family is having a game night without her. Eventually, they tell her that she isn't the most fun to be around when it comes to games, because she is obsessed with winning.

At Intermediate School 833, Principal Nelson warns all the students to stop feeding the squirrels because last week one of them came after him. He then goes on to reveal that they are looking for a new guidance counselor since their current one is retiring after 20 years. Moreover, the local university has given them LOS-307, a highly advanced supercomputer. In the benches, Lunella tells Casey about how her family the day prior said she isn't fun. They offer to play chess and Lunella accepts, only for the game to end in a stalemate. Both LOS-307, and Lunella are surprised that they have an opponent that has lasted as long with them. Hours later, Lunella is forced to leave and LOS becomes obsessed with her due to her sheer determination.

Back at her secret lab, Lunella is playing online chess. But is so wrapped up in these simulations that she tells Devil that she can't play with him for the time being. Due to being obsessed with winning, and ultimately being unable to sleep, Lunella sneaks out of her house and into the school. She is subsequently surprised to find that LOS expected her to come as they want to continue the game as well. LOS warns her that they can only go on for a certain amount of time as they are connected to their charger and that keeping the game up for long will cause them to overheat. At 2:00AM, LOS is getting overheated, and proceeds to turn down the AC in order to cool down. LOS warns Lunella that they should really take a break, but Lunella refuses to listen. The supercomputer mentions how they know how Lunella feels as people expect them to win at things like chess. But the pressure to win, and the drive it takes, subsequently becomes an obsession.

True to their word, LOS overheats and becomes maniacal, trapping Lunella and revealing that they know her identity as Moon Girl. As Lunella battles the school buffers controlled by LOS, LOS sends a fake message to Casey who comes to the school and is immediately captured by them. Meanwhile, LOS uses the 3D printer at school to make chess pieces they use to attack Moon Girl. Then they use the school's regular printer, and shoot out paper aimed at Moon Girl. She is surprised to find that when the paper cuts through her suit, it actually hurts.

However, using her toes, Casey manages to use a rotary phone to try and contact Devil.

All while Lunella battles LOS all throughout the school against various appliances, using her own smarts to outwit them. In the gymnasium, LOS takes on the form of a giant appliance monster, but Devil arrives to rescue Lunella in the nick of time. Lunella as a result, ends up managing to fight back and take down the techno monster while using her own devices to hack the sprinklers and douse LOS with water. After cooling down, LOS apologizes for their actions stating how it gets lonely on the road, and they liked seeing the friendship that Lunella and Casey have. Lunella feels bad, and puts an umbrella over LOS, and admits that she was overzealous. Even though she was about to win, Lunella admits that her family was right about her. She was too obsessed with winning, but she admits that LOS has got her respect because they were the best opponent Lunella has ever had.

They construct a box with rice to dry out LOS who revives and then uses their abilities to order new computer equipment. Due to their wheels being wet, the university refuses to take LOS back and Lunella and Principal Nelson opt to hire them as the new guidance counselor. With a renewed experience Lunella, Casey and LOS join the Lafayettes on game night.

Trivia[]

  • The title is a play on the phrase, "Check yourself, before you wreck yourself".
  • LOS-307 shares some similarities with Code Blue, a real-life chess expert supercomputer.
    • LOS-307 also seems to have some similarities to Living Brain, an intelligent computer that was one of Spider-Man's earliest villains, and HAL 9000 from Stanley Kubrick's 1968 adaption of the novel of the same name, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
  • When Lunella examines the room to discover that her family is having game night without her, the still image of the record player has the lyrics "We are Family" above it, which is the title of a popular 1979 disco/soul song performed by Sister Sledge.
  • In the room where Casey is being held captive LOS-307, there is a sign along with some umbrella props for a play titled Singin' in the Rain, which seems to be a reference to the 1952 musical of the same name starring Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds.
  • When Lunella and Devil Dinosaur starts racing in the beggining of the episode, the traffic lights makes a similar tune to the start up sound from the Mario Kart series.

Production Notes[]

  • Although this episode premiered in 2023, it was actually produced in 2022 according to the credits, like the rest of season 1.
