Mane is a supervillain of the series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.[1] Mane is Lunella's hair brought to life by experimental conditioner created by Lunella, but embittered by Lunella's discarding of her in favor of smoother hair, she set out to ruin Lunella's life in retaliation.
History[]
Lunella Lafayette never took hair care seriously, but when a girl in her class made a snarky remark, she decided she wanted her hair to be more like that of her friend, Casey Calderon, straight and fabulous. However, Lunella's mother had a passionate hatred of Relaxer treatments. Casey attempted to tame Lunella's locks, though her tools and methods were all wrong for Lunella's naturally curly hair.
That evening, Lunella tried to create a Relaxer without all the harsh chemicals. It did successfully straighten her hair, but since she forgot to make a neutralizer (the stuff that you put in your hair to make the Relaxer stop working), all of her hair fell out about three seconds later. The hair ball came to life and gained sentience, becoming Mane.
Furious that Lunella decided out of the blue that she wasn't good enough for her, and that she had allowed Casey to harm her during the aforementioned attempted straightening treatment, Mane began to destroy Lunella's life; ruining her school science project, interfering with Moon Girl's hero work, and destroying the wig that Casey lent her, along with all the other wigs in Casey's collection.
When Lunella was about to start searching for the cause of all her recent troubles, Mane revealed herself and berated Lunella for her wrongs against her. Mane then stole the vat containing Lunella's Relaxer, intending to make an army of hair monsters.
Mane set up shop in a hair salon and stuffed a dryer chair full of hair and brought it to life with the Relaxer, Devil Dryersaur.
Lunella tracked Mane down and developed a neutralizer to turn Mane back into an ordinary hairball. Devil Dryersaur was defeated almost immediately by Devil Dinosaur, but Moon Girl and Mane were too evenly matched.
Having learned her lesson, Lunella made up with Mane and she allowed herself to be sprayed with Lunella's neutralizer. Mane reattached herself to Lunella's scalp and as her consciousness faded, she left Lunella with a parting message: if Lunella was good to her, then she would be good to Lunella in return.
Lunella made it a point to take good care of her hair from then on.
