Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, or simply Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, is a Marvel Disney-animated series based on the comic book duo of the same name.[7] It premiered on February 10, 2023 on Disney Channel.[6][8] On October 8, 2022, ahead of the series premiere, Disney Channel renewed the series for a second season,[5] which premiered on February 2, 2024.[9]
Premise
- "Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur" follows the adventures of 13-year-old super-genius Lunella Lafayette and her ten-ton T-Rex, Devil Dinosaur. After Lunella accidentally brings Devil Dinosaur into present-day New York City via a time vortex, the duo works together to protect the city's Lower East Side from danger.[7]
Production
The concept of the series began during talks between executive producer Laurence Fishburne and Marvel Studios co-president, Louis D'Esposito, on a potential collaboration project. When D'Esposito gave Fishburne a Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur comic book, Fishburne, having read the original Moon-Boy and Devil Dinosaur comic series as a child, gained interest.[10] Afterward, he began researching the Moon Girl comic, leading to the idea for an animated adaptation.[11][10]
On February 7, 2022, at the Television Critics Association 2022 Winter press tour, Disney Branded Television's panel, a first look of Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, debuting on Summer on Disney Channel! Executive producers Laurence Fishburne and Steve Loter, supervising producer Rodney Clouden, and cast members Diamond White, Libe Barer, and Fred Tatasciore, were present to talk about the trailblazing series.[12]
According to Loter, the series was actually developed twice, an initial draft and a second draft made after he came on board.[13] The production team decided to make the animated adaptation its own series in order to open up opportunities for stories with the original comic serving as a "springboard" to reference from, albeit while including a few nods to its source material,[14] a choice that, Loter explained, helped the show "go to places where we needed it to go for a different medium".[15] Since Moon Girl is an adapted property, the family narrative was ultimately expanded from its source material through the original concept of Roll With It, the last family-owned roller skating rink in New York City. "We put our own spin to it, to make it entertaining and educational but also to include a portrayal of Black families that are three dimensional," according to supervising producer Rodney Clouden.[15] The show's format would start off with an episodic format as Lunella starts to truly become Moon Girl, before transitioning into a more serialized story with an arc unfolding throughout the first season, and with an antagonist rising up from the background.[16]
According to Clouden, the series' visuals were influenced by the diversity of New York along with comic books.[14] The culture of New York was reflected in from graffiti, street art, screen-printing and the work of artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol.[17] In reference to Devil Dinosaur's debut in 1978, the produces drew inspiration from classic comic books of the 1970s for the series' hand-drawn, ink style to invoke the feeling of an illustrated moving comic.[14][18][17]
As a proof-of-concept, the crew created a roller-skating sequence played over "Sweatpants" by Childish Gambino to pitch to Disney Television Animation executives.[14]
On February 20, 2018, it was announced that an animated series was in development for Disney Channels Worldwide. The series would be produced by Marvel Animation and Cinema Gypsy Productions. Fishburne and Helen Sugland were set to executive-produce the series.[19] On August 24, 2019, at D23 Expo, Fishburne announced Disney Channel greenlit the series for 2020.[2][14] Concurrently, many of the production crew announced their involvement in the series on Twitter. In an official response, Fishburne stated "Disney Channel is the perfect platform to explore this pint-sized female African American superhero and [he] can't wait for their audience to enjoy the lighthearted adventures of Lunella and Devil Dinosaur",[2] with Cort Lane, then-senior vice president of Marvel Animation & Family Entertainment, adding "[Lunella's] adventures with giant buddy, Devil Dinosaur, are filled with so much wonder and joy, and this historic partnership with Disney Television Animation and Cinema Gypsy Productions proved the right formula to bring them to television".[2]
On February 10, 2021, it was announced that Diamond White and Fred Tatasciore would voice the titular characters, Lunella Lafayette and Devil Dinosaur, respectively. It was also announced that Alfre Woodard, Libe Barer, Sasheer Zamata, Jermaine Fowler, and Gary Anthony Williams would be part of the main cast.[20][21]
On July 1, 2022, it was announced that Raphael Saadiq was added to the series as executive music producer.[22] According to Loter, Saadiq agreed to create songs and score for Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur after seeing a 30 second show pitch at a record signing at Amoeba Music.[23]
On October 28, 2022, ahead of the series premiere, Disney Channel renewed the series for a second season.[5][24]
On February 20, 2023, said that he hoped that the overall impact will be seen on the series, when young girls between the ages of six and 16, who are watching this show, become women.[25]
On March 2, 2023, the hit new animated series awarded the Critics Choice Association Seal of Female Empowerment in Entertainment and the Common Sense Seal.[26]
On March 8, 2023, it was revealed that in the episode Skip This Ad...olescence, the X-Men: Days of Future Past poster which wasn't originally in the script. They just boarded it & hoped they'd let him keep it. Moreover, he also suggested the characters that show up in the background.[27]
To this day, Steve's amazed by animation's connection with an audience. “It's something you've drawn and brought to life through illustration to tell a story and create emotions and connections. To me, that's absolutely magic.”[28] Bone Raider

- When asked about the show's format, Loter confirmed that the series will start a little episodic as Lunella gets to become Moon Girl, but get serialized early.[16]
- According to Christine Liu, her inspiration for the series' direction actually comes from listening to the music that plays in the episode first, before using the music's themes as a reference point.[37]

Juwono confirmed that this was intentional and symbolizes Lunella's evolution to Moon Girl.[40]
- On February 10, 2023, in regards to the show's themes, White gave the following statement: "[y]ou have to really care... - On February 17, 2023, Luciano Herrera confirmed that Ahmed's deli was designed in a way to get that "LOS feel right". Herrera did as much research as they could to make places feel familiar, if not a "distant memory."[49]
- In the original draft, Diamond White auditioned with many others and got the part for Moon Girl originally. When Loter came onboard with a new vision, Diamond's audition was the first and only audition he heard.[13]
- According to Loter, the show's universe is complementary to both the original Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.[50]
- On March 5, 2023, Annie Li, a storyboard artist for Disney mentioned how now that Moon Girl's Day Off premiered, she wanted to share some of her favorite storyboards from the episode. Li further mentioned how itt was really fun pushing everyone's expressions and poses.[51]

- There are no immediate plans for Inhumans to make an appearance, Loter confirmed that some of his favorite characters are in fact Inhumans.[54]
- Loter's favorite character is The Beyonder in large part to Laurence Fishburne's performance, which he finds as so inspirational and admits that he's really fun to draw.[55]
- Limited merchandise coming out this year, but if folks want to see more products, they need to please let Target, Walmart and Amazon know.[56]
- When asked just how much freedom do the writers have with utilizing or referencing the wider Marvel universe, Loter, confirmed that they work very closely with Marvel Animation.[57]
- Also, when asked if there will be an official devil plush available sometime, Loter said he hoped so![58]
- When question as to whether or not Moon Girl is connected to the MCU after The Avengers theme played and Sam's Captain America appeared in the episode, "Today, I Am a Woman", someone also asked if Miles Morales appear in Season 2 and if Zeno Robinson will voice him. Loter said that he feels that they are complimentary to the MCU, though you do see more familiar characters in season two in particular. He also said that Zeno is incredible and they love Miles. So they will keep that in mind.[59]
- Loter went onto say that they use the incredible work from the comics as a launching point. Thus, they are telling stories in two different mediums, which require different tools. For instance, they wanted the show to be very musical, so they looked for ways to bring in music in a visual way that a Comic couldn't do.[60]
- With Sam, recently making an appearance in the series, Loter teased that it was possible for the likes of other Marvel characters such as Steve Rogers, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, etc.[61]
- In addition, another viewer asked if the gadgets Moon Girl made in Season 1, will make a reappearance in Season 2. Or whether she will update them and make new tech. Loter thus said that with with all of her equipment destroyed, it's safe to say that she will need to make some new stuff and juice it up![62]
- As to whether or not Devil Dinosaur will ever speak fluent English in the future, Loter said maybe.[63]
- Moreover, Loter was asked if there was any hesitation from “higher ups” to feature Bill Foster and get Laurence Fishburne to reprise the role, or if it was easy with no fuss. Loter confirmed that Marvel is an amazing partner, and they were excited to bring Bill back and so was Laurence.[64]
- When asked why in the end Season 1 was only 16 episodes Steve Loter confirmed that they combined some episodes and ideas and it just ended up being 16. But Season Two is bigger, and if you liked season 1, you will LOVE season two.[65]
- Someone else also asked Loter why originally it seemed like Season 1 was going to be 20 episodes, given the code from the remix song said episode 120, Loter stated that the production number on "OMG Issue Number 2 was 120, because they originally had 20 or so episodes planned. But some stories were combined and some were ultimately cut.[66]
- Whether or not every scene from shuffle mode in "Skip This Ad...olescence" was canon, because it sure seems to be lining up that way, even with the quick shot of Torg. Loter stated that most of the scenes are, but not all of them. So he urged folks to keep watching to find out which ones![67]
- Season 2 is WAY bigger, but still funny and heartfelt, The Beyonder plays a much bigger role in Season Two, and he hopes that the cast and crew can do more Comic Cons because it was so much fun! Although there are no further Funko pops planned right now.[68]
- Three words to describe Season 2 according to Steven Loter is The Hot Tomatoes![69]
- There are no current plans at this time to have Kamala Khan showing up in future seasons of MGADD.[70]
- There is no estimated release date for season 2 of MGADD at this time, but they've finished a number of episodes.[71]
- The time of animation software the show is made with is called Harmony but it's mainly hand drawn.[72]
- Loter's favorite episode of season 1 is The Beyonder.[73]
- Moon Boy may at some point make an appearance.[74]
- Since the show was delayed multiple times, there were episode ideas that had to be scrapped after starting production, because they ultimately want to tell the best stories, so sometimes ideas are shelved because we have better ones.[75]
- Loter also went onto tease the guest stars they got lined up for season 2.[76]
- Now that two people in the family know the secret, it's going to be really hard to not spill it![77]
- Loter's favorite line from the show so far came from the Beyonder from season one, where he said that this one's a fighter![78]
- According to Loter, the main inspirations to develop the unique visual style of the show and mixtapes are: Pop art, Warhol, Basquiat, Haring and graffiti.[79]
- In addition, Loter teased that there is a chance Evil Moon Girl will appear, but not Peter's Spider-Man, but other heroes may show up.He also further teased that mayber there's other plans for him to make another marvel show.[80]
- Lastly, Loter's favorite part of the season 1 finale was the music! Not only are the songs great, but he praised Raphael Saadiq's score which is fantastic too![81]
- On May 16, 2023, Jose Lopez released some expression sheets for Devil and Moon Girl via Twitter.[82]
