"Skip This Ad...olescence" is the ninth episode of the first season of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and the ninth episode overall.
It premiered early on March 8, 2023, on Disney+ and officially premiered on March 18, 2023.[1]
Synopsis[]
Lunella creates a device that allows her to fast-forward through mundane chores and tasks, but she struggles to handle the unexpected side effects.
Plot[]
Lunella awakens to Bill Withers' "Just the Two of Us" (see Trivia below for details on the song) and realizes that today is the Lafayette Family Cleaning Day. Lunella is further annoyed when her family decides on cleaning Roll With It for the upcoming 70s Disco Night Father-Daughter Dance competition. Eventually, she confides in Devil that she wishes she could skip the boring parts in her life like one does with an ad on a video and gets the idea to design an app called Skipster that can move her past the boring parts with just a press of the button, though she warns herself that it could tear a hole in the space-time continuum. The app works and due to its A.I. interface is able to learn and change and takes on the voice of Dr. Mae Jemison.
Lunella enjoys Skipster a little too much and tells Casey all about it, though her friend has some issues with it and warns her that it could be harmful in the long run. Casey explains that life is all about those tedious moments. Later, as she’s fighting the villain Garko the Man-Frog, Lunella skips through his monologue and realizes that she may have missed important information about how to stop him. Later while with her family, she fails to catch on to some of their in-jokes as the app puts her brain on autopilot and thus is unable to comprehend anything. After talking to Casey, she resolves to cease using the app. Overnight, Skipster develops to the point that it can no longer leave or be deleted by Lunella and starts to impede on her life, even when she does not need it. This causes her to miss out on disco night with her father. Which in turn makes her dad sad since he takes it as her outgrowing these father and daughter things now that she is 13.
Lunella realized how Skipster is ruining her life and finally decides to hack into her phone's code to stop her. This causes her to be sent to various points in time like kindergarten, where a younger Eduardo, wants to play with her device. Later, Lunella faces off against Torg, the Abominable Snow-King. The device then skips to her sixteenth birthday, followed by going to prom with Eduardo, who appears to be shocked to see her. Later, she is confronted by a man in a white suit wearing a gold ring. Followed by Lunella interacting with a small Devil Dinosaur. Lunella also finds herself in the future, being captured by a large robotic arm. Followed by going into the past, when she was singing with Tai and Brooklyn during their sleepover. Alas, she winds up in the future, hinting at later things to come.
Lunella ends up in a void filled with all of her past, present and future memories of her life and tells Skipster that she now values the little things in life. Skipster says that she has learned a lot and allows her to leave to the point before she built her. Using the song "Just the Two of Us", Lunella manages to find the right spot just before her cell phone battery dies. Lunella subsequently wakes up to her father announcing cleaning day and Lunella happily embraces her father and the tiny details of her future.

Allusions[]
- Lunella and James Jr. go to see Mission: Highly Unlikely 8 starring Tom Bruise, an obvious nod to the Mission: Impossible franchise starring Tom Cruise.
- One of the timeskips shows an older Lunella in front of a "Wanted" poster with various characters from Marvel Comics. This is an homage to the cover of Uncanny X-Men #141, "Days of Future Past".[5] This was a pitch boarded by character designer Samir Barrett, who also suggested its cameos.[4] The poster features the following characters from left-to-right:
- In one of the timeskips, Lunella is battling another Lunella who has devil-themed attire. This may be a reference to Devil Girl, Moon Girl's evil counterpart from an alternate universe in the comics.
- Casey calling Lunella "Ms. Skip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" is a reference to the song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" from the 1946 Disney movie Song of the South.
Production Notes[]
- Although this episode premiered in 2023, it was actually produced in 2022 according to the credits, like the rest of season 1.
Errors/Goofs[]
- When the family is playing Name that Name! Celebrity Edition, the shirt James Jr. is wearing switches from a unicorn to a Roll With It T-shirt and back.
